Four Killed and 15 Wounded in Three Halloween Night Shootings in Dallas Deep Ellum as Police Seek Video and Witnesses
DALLAS, TX — At least four people were killed and 15 others were injured after three separate shootings broke out overnight in Dallas’ Deep Ellum entertainment district, according to Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux. The violence unfolded between midnight and 1:30 a.m. early Sunday, during Halloween weekend crowds.
Comeaux said investigators were still trying to determine exactly what happened at each scene and whether any of the shootings were connected. Police had not publicly identified any suspects by Sunday morning, and they had not released details about what led to the gunfire.
Police responded to three crime scenes within about 90 minutes
Dallas police said officers were first called to a shooting around 12:19 a.m. Sunday in the 2600 block of Elm Street. A second shooting was reported just after 1 a.m. in the 2600 block of Main Street, roughly one block south of the first scene.
The third shooting was reported about 1:35 a.m. on the 200 block of Crowdus Street, about two blocks east of the other locations. Comeaux declined to give the exact addresses, but he confirmed all three incidents happened in Deep Ellum.
Police also answered a separate shooting call around 3:30 a.m. on South Ervay Street, which is outside the entertainment district. It was not immediately clear whether that incident was related to the Deep Ellum shootings.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether the shootings were connected
Comeaux said detectives and officers were working through witness statements, custody interviews and other evidence to sort out the sequence of events. He said police had no information yet proving the shootings were related, but the investigation was continuing.
“The detectives and officers are still trying to put everything together to understand exactly what happened on each scene,” he said, adding that investigators were looking for any link between the incidents.
Police said at least one person had been arrested in connection with one of the shootings, and investigators were interviewing people in custody. Authorities have not identified that person publicly or announced formal arrests tied to the broader case.
Chief says officers were already staged for Halloween crowds
Comeaux said Dallas police had added officers throughout Deep Ellum on Saturday night because of the expected Halloween turnout. He said the department planned for a heavy crowd and had enough staffing in place before the shots were fired.
The chief praised the response from officers on scene, saying one officer was close enough to hear gunfire and immediately ran toward the shooting. He also said one officer provided lifesaving care to an injured person and helped revive them.
“We were fully staffed out here,” Comeaux said. He said the police presence helped keep more chaos from spreading after the initial shootings.
Police are asking for videos and photos from anyone downtown overnight
As the investigation continued, Comeaux urged anyone who was in Deep Ellum overnight and recorded video or took photos to share that material with police. He said investigators were already getting tips, but they needed more evidence to piece together what happened at each location.
He asked the public to send anything from phones or social media, even if it did not seem important at first glance. “We need all the videos you have,” Comeaux said, noting that useful footage may have been captured by people who did not realize it at the time.
Police said even partial recordings could help confirm witness accounts and establish a timeline for the shootings.
The violence adds to a string of shooting cases in Deep Ellum this year
The Halloween shootings marked at least the fourth time this year that multiple people have been wounded by gunfire in Deep Ellum, a busy entertainment district east of downtown Dallas. The area has seen repeated violence during major nightlife events.
Two people were shot there early Friday, Aug. 14, along Canton Street. A week later, a man was arrested after three people were shot along Elm Street in the early morning hours of Aug. 23.
Earlier in the spring, gunfire erupted along Commerce Street during Cinco de Mayo celebrations, leaving five people injured. The latest shootings renewed concerns about violence in the district as police continued their investigation.
