Ocala Man Accused of Killing Two Roommates After Argument Over Ice Cream, With Police Saying One Victim Was Shot Outside the Home
OCALA, FL — A 69-year-old Ocala man is facing a second-degree murder charge after police say a dispute with his two roommates over ice cream ended with both men dead. Ocala police identified the suspect as Mark Robinson and said the shooting happened at a home on SE 8th Street.
Investigators say officers first responded to the house on Wednesday morning after an argument broke out among the three roommates. According to police, the fight began when someone allegedly ate another person’s ice cream. The other two roommates later left the home for a walk, but the situation did not end there.
Police say Robinson later armed himself with a shotgun and said he feared something bad was about to happen.
Police say the dispute escalated when the roommates returned
Ocala police said the two roommates came back to the residence and another argument followed. Investigators say Robinson told them that during that confrontation, one roommate allegedly charged at him while holding a knife.
Police have not released details about exactly how the confrontation unfolded before the shots were fired. What investigators do say is that the second roommate ran out of the home and into the front yard, where Robinson shot him in the back.
Robinson later surrendered to police and admitted that he shot both roommates, according to the Ocala Police Department. One man was found dead inside the house, while the other was found outside with a gunshot wound and taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Detectives are still weighing Robinson's self-defense claim
Robinson has claimed he acted in self-defense in the shooting inside the home, police said. That claim is still being examined by detectives as they continue to sort out what happened in the moments before the deadly encounter.
For now, police have only filed one second-degree murder count, tied to the roommate who was shot in the front yard. Investigators said additional charges remain possible as the case develops.
The details matter because police are treating the two shootings differently. One death occurred inside the home after Robinson said he believed he was facing an attack, while the other victim was allegedly shot while fleeing outside.
Officers had already been called to the house multiple times this year
Ocala police described the living situation at the home as a “dysfunctional living arrangement.” They also said Robinson had prior issues involving alcohol, though investigators did not provide more detail about that history.
Police said they had responded to the residence three times this year before the deadly shooting. Those earlier calls involved disturbances between Robinson and his roommates, as well as separate problems involving neighbors.
That history, police said, helped frame the latest confrontation as part of a pattern of conflict inside and around the home rather than a one-time dispute.
How officers found the victims after the shooting
According to police, one of the victims was discovered dead inside the residence, while the other was found shot outside and rushed to a hospital. He later died from his injuries.
The location of each victim has become a key part of the investigation. Police say it is one reason detectives are still sorting through Robinson’s account of self-defense versus the circumstances that led to the second shooting in the yard.
Authorities have not said what kind of knife, if any, was recovered, and they have not released further information about the victims’ identities. The investigation remains active as detectives review the sequence of events.
What Ocala police have said about the case so far
Police announced Robinson’s arrest on Wednesday night and said he was being held on suspicion of second-degree murder. On Thursday, the department released additional information from its investigation and a news conference.
The case was described by police as disturbing, but investigators emphasized that they are still working to determine the full legal picture. They said more charges are possible depending on what detectives confirm about the shooting and the disputed events leading up to it.
For now, the basic outline remains the same: a disagreement over ice cream escalated, the roommates split up, the dispute resumed, and two men ended up dead after gunfire at the home.
