Law enforcement personnel respond after a deadly shooting during a warrant service in East Texas

Van Zandt County Deputy and Suspect Die in Canton-Area Gunfire Exchange as One Officer Is Wounded During Warrant Service Tuesday Night

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, TX — A Van Zandt County sheriff’s deputy was killed and a Canton police officer was wounded in a gunfire exchange with a wanted suspect Tuesday night, according to Sheriff Kevin Bridgett. The suspect also died at the scene. Authorities said the confrontation happened while officers were trying to serve a warrant at a residence south of Canton.

Sheriff Bridgett identified the fallen deputy as Adam Sherifi. Officials said Sherifi was shot during the warrant operation, and the wounded Canton officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The sheriff said the information released so far is preliminary as investigators continue sorting out the sequence of events.

Warrant attempt turned deadly near State Highway 198

The shooting unfolded around 10:20 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at a home in the 4300 block of State Highway 198, just south of Canton. Van Zandt County deputies had gone to the location to assist Canton police in serving the warrant, authorities said.

The suspect was wanted on felony warrants through the Canton Police Department for aggravated assault and aggravated assault on a peace officer. Sheriff Bridgett said deputies and officers were outside the home when they reported gunfire coming from inside the residence, prompting them to return fire. The suspect was later found dead inside with a gunshot wound.

Sheriff identifies Deputy Adam Sherifi as the fallen officer

Sherifi’s death hit the department and the community hard. Bridgett said the deputy leaves behind his wife and three children, including one child born in September. The sheriff did not immediately release additional details about Sherifi’s service record or the circumstances of the shooting beyond the preliminary account.

Malakoff Mayor Nicole Mason-Driver publicly expressed condolences to the family, saying there are no words that can ease the pain of losing someone loved. She said she is praying for comfort, strength and love for Sherifi’s wife and children in the days ahead. Her remarks reflected the close-knit reaction that often follows a line-of-duty death in a rural county.

Canton officer hospitalized after exchange of gunfire

Officials said one Canton police officer was injured in the gunfire exchange and was transported to a local hospital. Authorities have not released the officer’s name or an update on the extent of the injuries. No other officers were reported hurt in the incident.

The Texas Municipal Police Association also issued condolences to Sherifi’s family and to fellow officers. The group’s statement added to the wave of support coming from law enforcement allies after the deadly confrontation. Even with the limited details available, the shooting quickly became a major loss for both the county sheriff’s office and the Canton Police Department.

Texas Rangers take over investigation into the shooting

The Texas Rangers are investigating the incident, which authorities described as isolated. Officials said there is no threat to the public following the shooting. That assessment suggests the encounter was tied to the warrant service at the residence rather than an ongoing danger in the area.

Sheriff Bridgett said the investigation remains in an early stage, and no additional information was immediately available. The preliminary nature of the update means authorities are still working to confirm the exact moments before, during and after the exchange of gunfire.

Community grief builds after deadly night in East Texas

The deadly encounter has already drawn attention across East Texas because it involved multiple law enforcement agencies and ended with two people dead and one officer hurt. For residents of Van Zandt County, the loss of a deputy during routine warrant service underscores how quickly an operation can turn fatal.

As investigators continue their work, officials have shared only the basic facts: a warrant service, a burst of gunfire from inside the residence, return fire from officers and deputies, and a scene that left Sherifi, the suspect and one Canton officer among the casualties. More details are expected only after the Texas Rangers advance the investigation.
