Dez Bryant Says Texas Road Rage Dispute Ended With Him Handcuffed at Gunpoint as Police Investigated a Reported Firearm Threat

DALLAS, TX — Dez Bryant says a confrontation outside a Texas restaurant escalated from aggressive driving into a police response that left the former Dallas Cowboys receiver handcuffed on the ground at gunpoint. Bryant said two motorists cut him off before the dispute continued after everyone stopped near the restaurant.

According to Bryant, the argument turned tense when one of the men suggested he might get a firearm. Bryant said he reacted angrily to that threat, and police were later called to the scene. Officers then ordered Bryant and the two other men to lie on the ground while they investigated what had happened.

Footage obtained by OutKick shows Bryant and the other men face down as officers responded to the situation.

Bryant says the dispute started with reckless driving and verbal threats

Bryant said the encounter began when two men driving recklessly cut him off as they were heading toward the same restaurant. He described the exchange as a road rage dispute that continued after the vehicles stopped.

He said the situation worsened when one of the men implied he would use a gun during the argument. Bryant recalled telling the man that if he pulled a weapon, he should be prepared to use it.

Bryant also said no gun was actually produced during the confrontation. He said one of the men started recording video on a phone, and Bryant admitted he pushed the phone away during the argument.

Police ordered all three men to the ground and handcuffed Bryant

When officers arrived, Bryant said they took control of the scene quickly and ordered all three men onto the ground. He said he was then handcuffed while police assessed the situation.

A woman in the video can be heard telling officers that nobody involved was carrying a gun, while an officer is seen pointing a rifle in the general direction of the group. Bryant said he was placed in a police vehicle while officers questioned the men involved.

He was later released with a citation, and the other two men were also allowed to leave. Bryant said no one was hurt during the incident.

Bryant says his family arrived during the police response

Bryant said the incident became even more upsetting because his girlfriend and children arrived while officers were still handling the scene. He said his children saw him on the ground as police detained him.

“My lady pulled up, she got my children, and they seen everything that was going on,” Bryant said, describing the moment as especially distressing for his family. He said what started as a dispute over driving turned into something far more serious once police were involved.

Bryant did not say whether his family had been in the area already or were arriving separately when the confrontation unfolded.

Former Cowboys receiver says officers should have investigated more fully

Bryant criticized the way officers handled the response, saying they should have taken more time to sort out the competing accounts before deciding how to proceed. He said police seemed to accept one side too quickly.

He said he would have preferred being taken to the police station so officers could conduct a more complete investigation. In his view, the response felt one-sided.

Still, Bryant said the episode did not erase his generally good relationship with local law enforcement. He said he knows an officer whose son plays football with his child, and that their previous conversations have always been friendly.

Bryant says the encounter was unfortunate but did not change his view of local police

Even while questioning the arrest-style response, Bryant emphasized that he did not see the incident as a sign of a broader problem with police in the area. He said his earlier interactions with officers had been positive and casual.

According to Bryant, those conversations have often centered on football and everyday topics. He said the confrontation outside the restaurant was an “extremely unfortunate” situation rather than a reflection of his usual experience with local officers.

The incident has drawn attention because of Bryant’s status as a former Cowboys star and because the video appears to show a fast-moving police response to a threat that never resulted in a gun being displayed.
