Police tape and officers block off a Dallas street in Deep Ellum after overnight shootings

Four People Were Killed and 15 Wounded in Three Dallas Shootings in Deep Ellum as Police Searched for Additional Suspects Overnight

DALLAS, TX — Dallas police said three shootings erupted within minutes of one another in Deep Ellum, leaving four people dead and 15 others wounded overnight. Officers shut down the entertainment district around 1 a.m. as they tried to sort out what happened and whether the incidents were connected.

The first shooting was reported around midnight at a convenience store in the 2600 block of Elm Street, where police said five people were shot in a parking lot during an apparent altercation. Minutes later, gunfire broke out near Commerce Street and South Crowdus Street. A third shooting followed around 1:35 a.m. in the 200 block of South Crowdus Street, where one more person was killed.

Police say the shootings happened at separate locations within a short time span

Investigators described the violence as a trio of incidents rather than one single scene. The first call brought officers to Elm Street, then more gunfire was reported a short distance away on Commerce Street, and another shooting followed along South Crowdus Street.

Dallas police said the second shooting left three people dead, while the third shooting claimed another life. In all, the overnight violence produced four fatalities and left multiple injured victims spread across the district. Police have not publicly tied a suspect to any one of the individual shootings.

The neighborhood was effectively sealed off as officers moved quickly between scenes. Police said the first reports came in while some officers were only two blocks away, allowing them to respond rapidly as the situation unfolded.

One suspect was detained as officers searched for more people involved

Police said one suspect was taken into custody, although investigators have not said which shooting that person may be connected to. Dallas Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said the department also had witnesses and that other people had been arrested during the investigation.

Even so, officers were still looking for additional suspects by Monday morning. Detectives went door-to-door in the area to gather surveillance video from nearby businesses and other potential evidence that could help identify everyone involved.

Comeaux said the department did not believe the three shootings were connected. That assessment remained the chief’s view after officers reviewed the early facts, though the investigation was still active.

Victims identified so far include two women and two men named by relatives

Public records reviewed by CBS News Texas identified two of the victims as 28-year-old Unique Elise Benjamin and 21-year-old Kanisea Scott. Loved ones also named two other victims as Anthony Marti, who was also known as Quincy McCleary, and Isaiah Boling.

The ages of Marti and Boling were not immediately available. Police have not released a full official list of the dead and injured, and the identities of the remaining victims were not included in the information reviewed Monday.

The human toll added to the shock in a neighborhood known for nightlife and late crowds. The shooting scenes stretched across several blocks in an area where businesses and pedestrians can be concentrated into a small space late at night.

Deep Ellum was closed down after another deadly night in the district

The overnight violence came about six months after another pair of shootings in Deep Ellum left a security officer dead and five other people injured. The latest attacks revived safety concerns in a district that has faced repeated violence in recent months.

Dallas City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert said city officials were thinking of the victims and their families and noted that police officers were already on the ground and able to respond immediately. She said the department would continue investigating and work to bring those responsible to justice.

Deep Ellum was shut down while police secured the area and tried to piece together the sequence of events. The rapid response, combined with the close timing of the gunfire, underscored how quickly the situation escalated overnight.

Officials are asking witnesses and businesses for help with evidence

Dallas police asked anyone with information to come forward and contact Sgt. Boz Rojas at 214-671-3598 or by email. Investigators are relying on witness accounts and video from nearby businesses to build a clearer picture of the shootings.

The Deep Ellum Foundation also announced listening sessions with Mayor Pro Tem Moreno at the Deep Ellum Community Center later this week. The meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, at 6 p.m., and Friday, November 6, at 2 p.m.

For now, investigators are still sorting out the full sequence of events and the roles of those taken into custody. Police have said more arrests are possible as they continue to work through evidence from the scene and from businesses in the area.
