Houston police investigate a wrong-way crash scene on a freeway near South Loop West

Wrong Way Crash on Houston South Loop West Kills One Driver and Critically Injures Another After Early Morning Head on Collision

HOUSTON, TX — A wrong-way driver was killed and another motorist was critically injured in an early morning crash on Houston’s South Loop West, according to Houston police.

Officers said the collision happened around 4:48 a.m. Sunday near South Loop West and Tierwester Road. Investigators said a vehicle traveling the wrong direction hit a Chevrolet Suburban head-on.

The driver of the Suburban was taken to Ben Taub Hospital in critical condition. Police said they saw no signs that the Suburban driver was impaired.

The wrong-way driver was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are still tracing how the wrong-way driver entered the freeway

Houston police said investigators have not yet determined where the wrong-way driver got onto the freeway. That remains one of the central unanswered questions in the case as the crash review continues.

Authorities have not released the name of either driver. They also have not said whether speed, roadway conditions, or another factor may have played a role.

Because the collision happened before dawn, the investigation is also focused on reconstructing the sequence of events that led to the head-on impact. HPD is handling the case.

No signs of impairment were seen at the scene

Investigators said they did not observe signs of impairment in the wrong-way crash itself or in the driver of the Chevrolet Suburban. That preliminary finding does not by itself explain why the wrong-way vehicle ended up on the freeway in the opposite direction.

The fatal driver was the only occupant in the vehicle, police said. Responding personnel found that person dead at the scene.

Police have not publicly said whether toxicology testing or other lab work will be part of the investigation. For now, officials are treating the crash as an open traffic fatality case.

A separate truck then struck two patrol vehicles while officers blocked the road

While officers were shutting down the area after the fatal crash, another truck hit two patrol vehicles, according to police. Officers were outside the vehicles at the time, and no injuries were reported.

The driver of that truck told police he had not been paying attention. Officers said they also saw no signs of impairment from that driver.

The second collision added to the disruption on the South Loop West, where investigators were already managing the scene and blocking roadway access after the first crash. Police did not say whether the patrol vehicles were disabled or damaged beyond the impact.

Ben Taub Hospital received the critically injured Suburban driver

The driver of the Chevrolet Suburban was transported to Ben Taub Hospital, one of Houston’s major trauma centers, after the head-on crash.

Police described that driver’s condition as critical. They did not release any additional information about injuries or whether anyone else was in the Suburban.

Emergency responders were on scene by the time officers arrived, and the fatal driver was pronounced dead there. The contrast between the two outcomes underscores how severe wrong-way freeway crashes can be, especially in the early morning hours when traffic is lighter but speeds remain high.

Houston police continue the traffic fatality investigation

HPD is leading the investigation and has not announced any charges or citations connected to the crash. Officials have also not said whether the road closure remained in place after the scene was secured.

For now, the case centers on two separate collisions: the original wrong-way head-on crash that killed one driver and seriously injured another, and the later impact involving the patrol vehicles.

Police are still working to determine exactly how the wrong-way driver entered the freeway and what led to the deadly collision near Tierwester Road.
