Last week, a potentially spectacular new season of RuPaul’s Drag Race was announced. RuPaul’s Drag Race is a reality series where a cast of drag queens compete in several different challenges episode by episode to gain the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar” and an additional prize of $100,000.

Queens who stumble in their original season and get eliminated might have the chance to come back for another attempt in seasons known as All Stars. This season will be the fourth edition of All Stars, and this one is likely to be the fiercest one yet, beat out only by All Stars 2, with its legendarily competitive cast.

Many people have an issue with drag race because it essentially boils down to flamboyant gay men putting on wigs, makeup and heels, prancing around a television set. However, the show is actually incredibly entertaining and very fun to watch, if a little bizarre at times.

It also appears to be hitting peak popularity right now as legions of teenage girls, persuaded by their token gay friends, have began to watch it. Fans of the queens have accumulated millions of views on YouTube videos related to the show, and they are now gathering by the thousands at drag race events in New York and Los Angeles.

The simple fact that an LGBT niche show has hit such a popularity that many of the queens are household names is incredible. While some people are not fans of drag race due to how overwhelmingly colorful and flamboyant it can be, I absolutely love that so many people are learning about an important niche in gay culture. I am extremely excited for the upcoming season and the guaranteed looks, drama and laughter it will bring.
