Banana Costume-Wearing Woman Helps Report Orlando Bar Crash After Vehicle Tears Through Outdoor Dining Area Overnight
ORLANDO, FL — A woman wearing a banana costume helped alert police after a vehicle crashed through the outdoor dining area of The Moderne Bar on Colonial Drive early Saturday, leaving behind major damage but no reported injuries. Stephanie Oropeza said she and her fiance were heading home from a Halloween party around 4 a.m. when they came upon the wreck outside the Orlando restaurant.
She said the car had already moved from the road toward the business when they arrived. Video from the scene shows the vehicle smashing through the bar’s outdoor seating area before coming to a stop after damaging tables, chairs and fencing.
Stephanie Oropeza says she stopped and called police while still in costume
Oropeza said the crash unfolded quickly and left her and her fiance stunned. She described the driver as first traveling on the wrong side of the road before veering into The Moderne and plowing through the patio setup.
Instead of passing by, Oropeza stopped and called Orlando police while still dressed in the banana outfit from the Halloween party. Her unusual appearance helped make the moment stand out, but she said the priority was making sure authorities were notified about the damaged restaurant and the possible danger at the scene.
Restaurant video turns the call for help into a viral moment
The Moderne later posted video of Oropeza making the call for help, using the clip to try to identify and thank her. The post quickly drew attention online, with the restaurant’s owner saying some viewers questioned whether the footage was real.
Owner Michael Nguyen said the scene was so strange that people asked whether artificial intelligence had been used to create it. He said he told them it was real and joked that it involved “a rogue 4:30 a.m. banana” wandering the streets of Mills and reporting the incident. The social media reaction helped turn a late-night crash into an internet talking point.
Oropeza says she woke up to headlines calling her a banana hero
Oropeza later saw the online posts and realized the video had spread beyond the restaurant’s own followers. She said she woke up, checked for crash coverage and found headlines describing her as a “banana hero.”
Asked what superhero name she would choose, Oropeza laughed and said “Banana Bandit.” Her lighthearted response matched the tone of a story that began with damage and concern but quickly shifted into an unusual feel-good moment for the people involved.
The Moderne says repairs could reach tens of thousands of dollars
Even with the online attention, Nguyen said the crash caused significant destruction. He estimated that the custom fence alone could cost between $30,000 and $50,000 to replace, and said the restaurant is still evaluating the full extent of the losses.
In addition to the fence damage, the crash destroyed about six tables and dozens of chairs. The patio area is an important part of the restaurant’s setup, so the impact reached beyond a single broken barrier and into the outdoor seating customers use regularly.
A free meal and a simple message after the crash
The restaurant eventually connected with Oropeza and thanked her with a free meal. Nguyen and his team said they wanted to recognize the person who stopped and made the call after finding the crash scene.
Oropeza said the gesture felt good and hoped the story would encourage others to help when they see someone in need. While police have not yet released additional details about the driver or what led to the crash, the scene has already become both a property-damage case and an unexpected example of community response.
